Ocean waves carry an enormous amount of energy, yet little has been done to harness it. AlphaMERS has developed a Wave Energy Converter to turn that movement into usable renewable energy.
The AlphaMERS Wave Energy Converter efficiently harnesses renewable energy from sea waves. It consists of a seabed unit and a surface unit of floats connected to it.
As waves move the surface floats up and down, that motion drives the converter mounted on the seabed — capturing energy directly from the rise and fall of the ocean waves.
Ocean energy comes in several forms. AlphaMERS is focused on harnessing wave energy, with a wave-powered boat also in development.
Energy from the horizontal flow of water as tides move in and out.
Energy captured from the vertical change in sea level between high and low tide.
The focus of our Wave Energy Converter — capturing the constant motion of surface waves.
Alongside the Wave Energy Converter, AlphaMERS has designed a wave-powered boat that is to be prototyped — extending the same principle of harvesting wave motion into propulsion.
